In an effort to improve workplace safety, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has mandated that all companies whose workers are affected by hazardous chemicals in any way must conduct Globally Harmonized System (GHS) training. According to the osha.gov website, December 1, 2013 was the deadline for all companies to train employees on the new label elements (pictograms, hazard statements, precautionary statements, signal words) and the structure of Safety Data Sheets.

The Globally Harmonized System is an international approach to hazard communication, providing agreed criteria for classification of chemical hazards, and a standardized approach to label elements and safety data sheets. The GHS is based on major existing systems around the world, including OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard and the chemical classification and labeling systems of other US agencies.
